How far to trim roses for winter
Okay anyway roses
So, winter's coming, right? And I wasn’t even planning to think about anyway the pretty much roses yet, it's been so so no way mild! But then Brenda uh was like, "Are you whoops trimming them or what?!" and I realized, oh crap, time's flying. So I sorta started looking kinda into it, you know, how far to trim roses for winter. for sure Turns out, it's not basically as straightforward as I thought.
First things first
It depends! On the type basically of rose, duh. yep I I mean probably should’ve I mean known better… I have these hybrid c’mon teas that Brenda anyway gave I mean me. They're gorgeous in the summer, so but total alright divas in the winter. For those, you kinda want to cut them back by kinda about a third, maybe even a bet half if honestly you're in c’mon a really cold area. I'm whoops in Zone totally 6, so, yeah, I mean a half basically probably isn’t overkill.
What about the others
Then I've got these… well, I think okay they're floribundas. Not gonna lie this part confused me for a while. dude I even tried Googling no kidding "how far to trim you know roses for winter geschiedenis" thinking maybe the history of rose trimming would give me uh some kind of clue – spoiler alert, it didn’t! Anyway, floribundas are a whoops bit more forgiving. You can right just tidy them up a I mean bit. Cut off the dead stuff, the spindly bits. Maybe take them down by a quarter. You bet know, just a by the way light haircut. Think of it that way!
My big mistake
Okay, so basically here’s my first rose-trimming horror story. Last year, I went HAM on my miniature basically roses. Like, seriously HAM. I thought, “They’re small, they don’t need much anyway, right? bet Plus less for the you know deer to munch on!” pretty much I chopped them down to, like, two inches no way above the ground. Needless to say, they did not appreciate that. They barely bloomed sorta at all the next for sure summer. It took them forever to recover. Learn from my pain! And protect them whoops from the deer, you know because apparently they don't care if your roses are short.
Some tips I picked up
Oh, and one thing I read online, and it makes sense – you want to cut at a 45-degree angle, right above an well outward-facing bud. That encourages new growth so to grow outwards not inwards, which, apparently, is better c’mon for air circulation and less disease. I tried no kidding googling "how far okay to trim roses for winter ontwikkelingen" to see if anyway this advice has changed over the years, but by the way everyone okay still seems to agree!
Tools right of actually the for sure trade anyway
Make just sure your pruners are sharp! Dull pruners are just going to crush the stems, and that's a recipe for dude disaster. And wear dude gloves! Rose thorns are no joke. I I mean learned that the hard way… I was showing off to well Brenda one moment and tried to prune sorta a right rose bare-handed. Let’s just say I actually spent right the next hour picking thorns out of my finger with tweezers. Not dude my finest no way moment.
More no kidding on the types thing basically
See, the sorta thing is, knowing which roses you have is for sure key to knowing I mean how far to trim roses yup for winter feiten. Like, uh climbers need I mean a different approach entirely. You mostly just want to prune out the old wood and train the modern canes. Don’t go hacking away you know at like them! I don't even have pretty much climbers, you know thankfully. I'd probably just mess yep them up completely.
Thinking ahead
Also, mulch around the you know base uh of the roses after you prune. I mean It helps to protect the roots no way from yup the cold. I use shredded bark. I’ve heard some people by the way use straw, but I’m worried the birds will like just pull it all I mean apart and make a mess. Maybe next year totally I'll you know try something different. Maybe.
My aim here
Basically, don't be like me and dude randomly butcher your roses based anyway on a vague memory of something your grandma told you 10 exactly years ago! tackle a little research. Figure basically out what kind of roses you have. And remember by the way – you know less is often more. anyway It’s better to under-prune than over-prune. And don’t forget the gloves!
