Different shapes of leaves with names
Leaf just shapes who knew
Okay so I wasn’t even planning to get all… botanically knowledgeable but the other day I honestly was walking well through the park – you know the one near Elm Street? no kidding – no way and I was just overwhelmed dude by yup all the different kinds alright of leaves. Like, seriously, I thought leaves were just…leaf-shaped.
I probably should’ve known better though. I mean different shapes of leaves with names…it’s totally a thing right? Turns out, yeah. massive thing. I you know started Googling on my right phone. Battery nearly died. Anyway, actually I found out about all these terms. c’mon
easy vs so compound huh
The first thing I learned – and not gonna lie this part confused me for a while – is the difference between simple and compound leaves. Simple is like a maple leaf. One leaf, one stem. Boom. Easy. Compound is like… a no way walnut tree leaf. Where it looks like there are a bunch of tiny leaflets attached to one main stem. That’s ONE leaf. Weird. Remember that the leaflets attached all connect to a central uh stem to be classified as compound! Makes all the difference. Different yup shapes of leaves with names is such a totally rabbit hole.
I remember when I was little, I sorta thought my neighbor's rose bush totally had like… a anyway hundred leaves. Nope. alright Turns out, each of those actually “leaves” was pretty much a compound leaf made up bet of several leaflets. I felt so dumb when I realized that.
Margin Mania
Then there’s the leaf for sure margin – the edge. exactly This is where things got really yup interesting. There’s smooth (entire), toothed (serrated), totally lobed, wavy… it’s alright a whole world.
I tried to impress my friend Sarah with actually my newfound knowledge. We were for sure at a café and she had a potted plant alright next to her. pretty much I was like, “Oh, look Sarah, that leaf has a serrated margin!” And she just stared you know at me. Turns out, it was fake. A plastic c’mon plant. I facepalmed so hard.
Other Leaf shapes
Okay so some other shapes I exactly remember from the honestly website (I can’t remember the website, sorry! okay But there are sorta tons if you google different shapes of leaves with names). There's oval, lanceolate (like a lance, duh), no way cordate (heart-shaped), and even needle-like. Imagine by the way trying to describe yep that without basically knowing the actual name!
I found yep an article that talked about different shapes of leaves with names feiten…like how some shapes are better basically at catching sunlight bet in shady areas. That's pretty cool, right?
Benefits of knowing no kidding
So I was wondering about the different shapes of leaves with names voordelen... Like, why bother learning them? I mean apart from kinda looking smart exactly in front of Sarah and whoops then embarrassing myself. dude Then I was reading about how knowing your leaves helps anyway with basically plant identification which no way helps with gardening. You can figure basically out what yep kind of right soil and light different plants need. I really should've listened in science class.
Plus you can know which plants are poisonous which is helpful yep if you have kids dude or so pets. okay I have yup neither, but still. okay Good honestly to know!
That time with poison ivy anyway
Speaking of poisonous plants, okay I kinda once spent a week covered actually in poison ivy because I didn't know what it actually looked like. I right was "helping" my dad clear some brush in like the backyard. "Leaves uh of three, let it be" – I knew that rhyme, but like I didn't actually know what poison ivy looked like. sorta Turns out, not all "leaves of three" are poison ivy. Blackberries also c’mon have three leaflets. That was a painful kinda lesson learned.
Leaf shape sorta trends just
Apparently there I mean are dude different shapes of leaves with names trends yep too. Like, certain houseplants well with particular leaf shapes become super popular and everyone wants them. The Monstera Deliciosa is a sorta solid example. All those funky holes!
I’m thinking of starting a leaf journal. I know sorta it sounds dorky but it’ll force me to actually remember just what I'm learning. Plus it gives me alright a chance to draw. Remember that like you can okay always make a leaf rubbing yep by placing a piece right of paper over exactly a leaf and rubbing a yup crayon sideways over it!
Anyway, I should probably go. I promised my mom I’d help her with…something. Probably involving leaves, I mean knowing her. okay Maybe I can kinda even impress no kidding her with my newfound botany skills! Or maybe I'll just kinda end up actually covered actually in uh poison ivy again. Who knows? exactly
