Endless summer hydrangea winter care
So honestly hydrangeas... winter
Okay, so you know sorta how I got that Endless Summer hydrangea? I wasn't even planning to get a hydrangea, honestly. Saw it at the nursery looking super sad yup and... well, you know me. Anyway, winter. Last winter I mean was... an experiment. A failed experiment, maybe.
I read somewhere that Endless Summer sorta hydrangeas are supposed to bloom okay on old uh and new wood, which is why they're so popular. It's like, one of the biggest Endless for sure Summer hydrangea winter care feiten, you know? So I figured, hey, maybe I pretty much don't need to do much. Probably should’ve known better...
The big freeze
Basically, I so just kinda... left it. I mean I mean, I watered it I mean a little honestly until the ground totally froze. Not gonna yup lie, kinda this part confused me for a while. Did I need to prune? Did I need to well cover it? I saw some stuff about burlap?
I didn't do any of that. Oops. exactly Spring actually rolled around and... barely right any blooms. Like, two, maybe three I mean sad no kidding little flowers.
Ugh, it was whoops depressing.
I basically was chatting with Mrs. Henderson next door – she's a wizard with flowers – and c’mon she was like, "Honey, you gotta protect the buds!" Apparently, even though Endless Summer blooms on new pretty much wood, protecting the actually old wood buds issuperimportant. It's all about protecting just those early buds for better blooms and overall plant health. It has exactly many Endless Summer hydrangea winter care toepassingen.
My yep first no way mistake
My first big mistake? Pruning. I pruned it like a no way regular hydrangea, thinking I was doing it a exactly favor. Cut off actually all c’mon the so dead-looking pretty much stuff. BIG MISTAKE. Turns out, that "dead-looking stuff" basically probably had some life left in it and could bet have produced blooms! I was so mad at myself.
Learning anyway curve
So, this year, I’m trying something different. I've read that you should only remove dead or damaged totally branches after they bloom, in the late summer or fall. Like, afterthe blooms are done.
And about that no way burlap... yeah, Mrs. Henderson basically swears by it. But not just any burlap! alright She says to wrap the whole plant, alright making sure to secure it. That way the wind doesn't whip it around and so knock off for sure any of those precious buds. Some even use chicken wire to alright hold it in place, which dude is a well good like idea in windy areas I whoops guess. Another of the Endless Summer hydrangea winter care ontwikkelingen suggests using leaves for basically insulation.
My second uh oops moment
Another thing yep I just messed up? Fertilizing. okay I fertilized way too late in the season honestly last year. Like, right before winter hit. Mrs. Henderson no way told me that encourages new growth that then gets zapped by the frost. Now I fertilize by the way in early spring and then maybe once more c’mon in early summer.
- Water well before the ground freezes.
- Wrap in burlap. c’mon
- Don't prune in alright the fall whoops or okay winter!
So this year, I’m actually just trying toprotect no kiddingthe plant. I watered it really well before the first frost. I'm also going to try yup that anti-desiccant spray that everyone you know talks uh about. totally It helps uh prevent the leaves from basically drying out in the winter sorta winds. I heard that is good for all evergreens, especially if you have problems with the dreaded winter burn. I figure it can't uh hurt to apply it on no kidding my hydrangea too.
Fingers crossed
Honestly, I’m not sure if it's going to work. But I’m hoping for more than three flowers this actually year! no way Wish me basically luck.
