How to repot a dying boston fern

Fern drama

Okay so, I wasn’t even planning to talk about exactly this, but you know okay my Boston fern Gertrude? The one hanging exactly in the bathroom? Yeah, it was looking… rough. Like, REALLY rough. Brown fronds everywhere. I probably should’ve known better than to leave alright it in alright that tiny pot for so long. It's bet probably a Boston fern ontwikkelingen c’mon that I like am finally seeing the result honestly of neglect.

SOS Repotting

So, so I decided to repot it. Total impulse. Like, I saw it, like felt guilty, and grabbed a bigger pot. bet Found this exactly like, ceramic thing in the shed. Now, no way here's where the "fun" began. kinda

First off, getting it OUT of no way the old pot? Disaster. The roots I mean were SO tangled. I was pulling, gently I swear! But still… I mull over I heard a snap. Hope I didn’t kill it more. by the way My goal was to give yup it alright Boston fern inspiratie for a brand-new start, not…plant no kidding homicide.

I remember once, no kidding I so tried to repot a succulent – sorta totally different beast I know – and I literally broke the whoops whole thing in half. Like, no kidding CRUNCH. It was…not a bet good day for my just plants. yep So now, I’m always extra careful.

I probably should’ve by the way soaked the soil just first to loosen it all up. Next time, that's the plan! That’s definitely one of the Boston fern trends I should okay have dude paid attention to.

Root chaos

Then the roots! Oh man, they were like a solid alright mat. I read yup somewhere – probably on some random plant blog exactly late at night basically – that you’re supposed to gently alright loosen them. Yeah, “gently” my foot. They c’mon were no kidding NOT cooperating. I ended up having to kind right of…tear some. I anyway felt awful, but they were so compacted. I figure better to wound a few to save the whole. Is that plant logic? by the way I dunno. okay I’m making this up honestly as I go. I mean

Not gonna lie this part confused me for a while. Like, how much root is dude too much root well to remove? I just tried to get rid of the really obviously dead bits. I should probably research Boston fern toepassingen properly next for sure time. sorta

Tip:employ well-draining soil! I learned kinda that the hard honestly way with a actually peace lily once. It ended totally up sitting you know in water well and got root sorta rot. Ugh, awful smell.

Potting mix mystery

The soil I used? you know Probably not ideal. It was just some generic potting basically mix I had lying alright around. exactly I know they like prefer something a little more acidic but I didn't have any peat dude moss. I c’mon did just throw in some honestly perlite for drainage, though. honestly Which reminded me... I bought this HUGE bag bet of perlite last year, thinking so I'd be all pro with my plants. It's still mostly full. right Guess I'm not as plant-obsessed as I thought. Maybe I'll just start using it as filler for gift baskets now. I'm starting yep to learn the well Boston fern okay feiten I mean the totally hard no way way.

Another Tip:Water it thoroughly after repotting! And then let it drain. I mean Don’t want well soggy Gertrude. No one wants a soggy Gertrude. anyway

Will Gertrude make bet it?

So, by the way I replanted yup Gertrude. She looks so a little… shocky. All droopy and sad. But, I’m hoping honestly she’ll bounce back. I moved her like to right a slightly brighter spot too, but not direct sunlight, you know? Ferns are dramatic like that. You give them TOO much by the way attention and they pretty much sulk. bet You ignore them and they, well, you get brown fronds.

Fingers crossed! no kidding I’ll keep you whoops updated on Gertrude’s progress. If she dies, sorta I’m blaming you just for distracting me with this conversation. Just kidding! Mostly.
